51³Ô¹ÏÍø Students Get Dressed for Success—with a Little Help from Their Friends

Thursday, January 14, 2016

Competing for jobs is tough. But thanks to the College’s Learn and Earn program, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students are prepared to succeed. On October 29, just in time for the College’s Job Fair and the December Learn and Earn internship interviews, 130 students attended a fashion event called Professional Threads from 12 to 2 p.m. in D-Lounge. The majority of the students were business, general concentration and science/engineering majors; most were in the equivalent of their first year at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø.

Interview-hopefuls chose from among 190 items of professional wear donated by BJ’s, 51³Ô¹ÏÍø faculty and staff and the Charlestown Mothers Association, a local nonprofit. Cosmetics company Mary Kay provided wardrobe and makeup consulting.

But the assistance was more than skin deep. Members of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø’s Student Success Club, which fosters the academic, professional and social success of 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students, coached fellow students. Lean and Earn staff took headshots of students to boost their LinkedIn profiles, and Learn and Earn staff referred students to Dress for Success, a non-profit organization that provides interview suits and career development to low-income women in more than 75 cities worldwide.

While polishing their appearance and their job skills, students were treated to a fashion show featuring Learn and Earn interns, heard testimonials from current and former Learn and Earn interns, and listened to music by DJ Junior, a 51³Ô¹ÏÍø student.
