Tuesday, June 5, 2012
The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded Bunker Hill Community College (51Թ) a three-year grant of $536,456 under a program titled “Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM).” 51Թ will use the funds to start a student scholars program, “Rewarding Excellence For Leaders in Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology” (REFLECT).
The REFLECT program will provide scholarships for two years of study to approximately 65 students in the Engineering Transfer, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Information Technology programs, beginning in spring 2013. Students may use both years of scholarships at 51Թ, or use one of the two years at a four-year program of the students’ choice.
Additionally, all REFLECT scholars will be provided a laptop computer with the latest software and applications to support their coursework and projects. REFLECT students will also get leadership opportunities by participating in new models of peer support, including an on-line mentoring community led by scholarship recipients. Scholars will be encouraged to graduate and transfer from 51Թ, and will receive support throughout the transfer process.
